It was a real eye-opener for many. A Muslim woman is not bound to serve her in laws. She can’t be forced to cook – it is for her husband to provide food. And no girl can be married without her consent.
When Mufti Mastan Ali of Jamiat-ul-Banaat reeled out the do’s and don’ts under Islam there were sighs of disbelief among the women present. Many seemed to be unaware of their rights under Islam. A programme organised by a group of concerne d citizens the other day at Urdu Ghar, Moghalpura, on ‘domestic violence in Muslim society – reasons and its solution’ turned out to be very illuminating for the audience.
For a change the ulemas explained clearly the rights of women in Islam and how she can’t be treated as chattel. Prof. Rehana Sultana of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, forcefully presented the problems faced by Muslim women. Many men in the audience were seen nodding their heads in agreement.
